Netball NZ Umpire Fitness Testing requirements

Umpires must have high physical fitness to perform their duties.

Umpires who hold a New Zealand Umpire Award have earned the right to wear the Netball New Zealand logo and are representing Netball New Zealand. Representing a national organisation comes with a responsibility to uphold the high standards of the award. As such, Netball New Zealand have minimum fitness standards for the various levels of netball.

Netball New Zealand, along with each Zone have put together the Community Umpiring Fitness Testing Guidelines. These guidelines are to be followed by all testers conducting the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test for umpires.

Effective Yo-Yo Testing

Testing must be completed within two weeks of these dates:

  • 15 March
  • 1 June
  • 1 August (for umpires wishing to attend NZ Open Champs)
  • 1 September

Testing must be carried out and verified by approved personnel and submitted to the Zone before the above dates.


2025 Netball Wellington Centre fitness testing dates
To ensure NZ umpires have current Yo-Yo Test results for events, qualifying, endorsements and upgrades NNZ requires regions to test umpires just prior to the following dates annually:

  • Sunday 9 March 9.30am to 10am
  • Sunday 25 May 9.30am to 10am
  • Sunday 20 July 9.30am to 10am
  • Wednesday 17 August 9.30am to 10am

All testing run at Ākau Tangi Sports Centre, 72 Kemp Street, Kilbirnie, Wellington

A guide to the minimum fitness levels that umpires are required to meet are outlined below:

PLEASE NOTE: The results from all Centres in the Zone are to be accumulated by the ZONE and then forwarded to NNZ.
