How Do I Become A Technical Official?

Do you have good concentration, attention to detail, an ability to work under pressure and love working as part of a team?  If you answered yes – why not become a technical official or statistician!

Technical officials and statisticians are a huge part of each match.  

What do Technical Officials do?

They call, score, keep time and record statistics for netball matches, and are responsible for the accurate recording of the score, and timing of the game.

Scorer 1 - Completes the Domestic scoresheet
Scorer 2 - Completes the Running scoresheet and calls to Scorer 1
Time Keeper 1 - Activates umpire alerts, manually times the game, and records quarter and injury time breaks
Time Keeper 2 - Controls electronic scoreboard, times intervals and injury breaks, and holds up injury time paddles.
Bench Manager - Oversees the entire Bench. Links with Event Officials and umpires.
Sub Writers - Records team substitutions as they occur and hands to the Bench Manager.

Key competencies:

  • Legibility: Figures, writing and symbols used e.g. dots - must be clearly and consistently formed
  • Size: Writing and figures etc which fit neatly and legibly inside the boxes and spaces provided
  • Mathematical skills: Accurate addition of statistics and checking of equations
  • Attention to detail: Accuracy optimal with ability to error-check as you go

Where can Technical Official skills lead?

Scorer 1, Scorer 2, Caller and Timekeeper

  • For a Scorer 1 to achieve a national certificate, competency must be shown at Netball New Zealand approved games which include International Test series, the ANZ Premiership,  National Netball League, the Open Grade (18+) Age Group Champs or New Zealand level games. These performances are assessed by Netball New Zealand.
  • To achieve a regional certificate in the Scorer 1, Scorer 2, Caller and Timekeeping disciplines, a candidate’s competency is judged on Region approved games which include the New Zealand Age Group Championships and the New Zealand Secondary School Championships. These candidates are assessed by the Region.
  • International test officials are selected from those who have demonstrated recent successful and competent form during the ANZ Premiership, National Netball League, and/or the Open Grade (18+) Age Group Champs. The appointment of these technical officials is at the discretion of Netball New Zealand.

These credentials need to be validated every three years to maintain the qualification.
